Thursday’s Orioles game was a hot one; the game time temperature was announced at 91 degrees with a “feels-like” index of well over 100 degrees. That heat must have transferred to the team’s bats as the Orioles tallied 15 hits in defeating the LA Angels by a score of 13-1.

The win essentially was a result of the battery that was Keegan Akin and Pedro Severino.

Akin by far had his best outing of 2021 and of his MLB career to date. The southpaw gave the Orioles 7.0 innings of work, allowed a Shohei Ohtani homerun in the first inning and then just two more singles after that, walked 2, hit a batter and struck out 6 in winning his first game of the season and the second of his career. He also picked off a runner at first base.

Severino, Akin’s battery-mate, took it from there. The catcher went 2 for 5 with a fifth inning grand slam homerun, 1 run scored and 6 RBI. The catcher also threw out Juan Lagares on an attempted steal of second base in the fifth inning.

Ramon Urias went 3 for 4 with a double, 2 runs scored, 2 RBI and a walk.

Cedric Mullins went 1 for 4 with 2 runs scored, 1 walk and 2 stolen bases while Trey Mancini went 2 for 5 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI and Ryan Mountcastle went 2 for 4 with a double, 2 runs scored, 2 RBI and a walk. Another fine game by the M’s.

Austin Hays, who entered the game as a defensive sub for DJ Stewart (1 for 1, 1 run scored, 1 RBI, 2 BB) in the 7th inning made the most of the situation by going 2 for 2 with a double and 2 runs scored.

Jorge Lopez relieved Akin and capped off the effort by striking out 4 and walking 1 over 2.0 innings.
