Sarasota; March 23:  Both Wednesday and Thursday were near perfect days for playing baseball at the Buck O’Neil Complex in Sarasota. However, Thursday’s games were cancelled due to rain. What say? Well, it was raining in Ft. Myers, so they cancelled the AAA and AA games. Then they said the rain was heading north to Sarasota, so there was no use in sending the AA and A teams there. Well, it’s 9:00 PM at this writing and no sign of rain yet. I remember only two rainy days since November. I guess the Red Sox wanted a day off. So, the Orioles Minors’ played two intrasquad games with their AAA, AA, A+ and A squads.

A highlight of Wednesday’s games at Twin Lakes was watching Donnie Hart and Darren O’Day pitch. They were over from the Major’s camp and both were sharp. Donnie Hart was painting the corners and his pitches were moving.

Darren O’Day

I left before Darren O’Day pitched because I received the sad news that my longtime baseball friend, Dallas Green has passed. I had known Dallas since before 1955, Here is a photo of Dallas and myself, probably taken in 2015. I was lucky enough to be counted among the countless friends of Dallas since the mid-50’s. The first two photos are more recent, while the third is from 1955 at the University of Delaware when he was Freshman Basketball Coach and Assistant Head Coach and I was his manager. Dallas was a pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies (1960-64; 67), Washington Senators (1965) and New York Mets (1966). More importantly, he managed the Phillies, the New York Yankees, and the New York Mets. He managed the Phillies when they won their first World Series title in 1980. Dallas also was executive vice president and general manager of the Chicago Cubs (1982-1987). With Dallas, the Cubs made their first playoff appearance since 1945 in 1984. Dallas is also credited with a major part in getting lights approved for Wrigley Stadium.
