It took 4 hours and 19 minutes and maybe even some blood pressure medication, but in the end the Orioles held on for a 9-7 win over the Houston Astros on Monday.
The game was tied at 4 going into the 9th inning, mainly due the Ryan Mountcastle’s bat. The first baseman had a RBI single in the 3rd inning and a two-run homerun in the 5th. He finished the game 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored, 3 RBI and 2 walks.
Cedric Mullins (3 for 5, 2 runs scored, 2 stolen bases) led off the 9th with a single. Austin Hays (3 for 5, 3 runs scored, 2 RBI) followed with a homer to left field. Pedro Severino (2 for 4, 1 run scored, 2 RBI, 1 BB) added a 2-run double and then Ramon Urias (1 for 5, 1 RBI) added a 1 RBI double of his own.
Paul Fry (1.1 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 1 K), who entered the game in the 8th, started the 9th inning with a 5 run lead. He immediately struck out Yordan Alvarez and then hit Carlos Correa with a pitch. Three consecutive singles drew the Astros within 3 and forced Fry from the game.
Adam Plutko (0.2 IP, 1 BB) relieved Fry and right away issues a walk to pinch-hitter Jason Castro to load the bases with one out. Jose Altuve’s sac-fly made the score 9-7 before Michael Brantley flew out to end the game.
Fry was credited with the win and Plutko the save.
Hays made the defensive play of the night by going above the right field wall to rob Kyle Tucker of a second inning homerun.
