The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Boston Red Sox by a score of 6-2 on Thursday night. The Birds, who many experts thought would be fodder for the Wild Card contenders, won the series with Boston two games to one. As a result of the loss, the Red Sox are now tied with the Seattle Mariners for the second Wild Card spot.

ROY candidate, Ryan Mountcastle (1 for 3, 1 Run Scored, 3 RBI, 1 BB) hit a 3-run homer in the third inning that gave the Orioles the lead, a lead they never relinquished.

Kelvin Gutierrez (2 for 4, 1 Run Scored) and Pat Valaika (2 for 2, 1 double, 1 run scored, 1 RBI) both had multiple hits.

Tyler Nevin went 1 for 2 with 1 run scored, 2 RBI and a walk.

Starter Alexander Wells made the best of the lead given him by producing a quality start. The southpaw allowed 1 run, a Kike Hernandez homerun to lead off the game, 3 hits, walked 2 and struck out 2 over 6.0 innings. Wells won his second game of the season.

Joey Krehbiel, Dillon Tate and Cole Sulser each pitched an inning of relief. Krehbiel allowed 1 run on 1 hit with a walk, a strike out and a wild pitch, while Tate just walked one and Sulser gave up one hit. The relievers kept the Red Sox in check.
