The Baltimore Orioles began their three game series in the motor city on a down note Friday night, losing 4-2 to the Detroit Tigers. The Orioles got a glimpse of what the future may hold with another player making his MLB debut but in the end they were stymied by a part of their past.
Former Baltimore farmhand Eduardo Rodriguez scattered 5 hits over 6.2 innings, walked 4 and struck out 3 in earning the win over the Orioles.
On the flip side, Jordan Lyles allowed all four of the Tigers runs on 6 hits while walking 3 and striking out six over 5.2 innings. Lyles was the pitcher of record and surrendered Miguel Cabrera’s 504th career homerun.
Trey Mancini (1 for 3, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 HBP) and Anthony Santander (1 for 5, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI) homered on back-to-back pitches in the eighth inning.
Cedric Mullins (2 for 5, 1 SB) and Jorge Mateo (1 for 4, 1 SB, 1 HBP) pulled off a double steal in the first inning.
Making his MLB debut, Denyi Reyes made quite an impression. The 25 year-old right-hander pitched 2.0 innings of relief, facing 6 batters and striking out 2. He needed 24 pitches (21 strikes) in doing so.
