The 2023 Arizona Fall League (AFL) kicks off on Monday, October 2nd. The league is comprised of six teams, the Glendale Desert Dogs, the Mesa Solar Sox, the Peoria Javelinas, the Salt River Rafters, the Scottsdale Scorpions and the Surprise Saguaros. Five MLB teams are assigned to each team on a rotating basis. This season the Baltimore Orioles players will play for Mesa, joining players from the Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees, Oakland A’s and Houston Astros.

The rosters were announced today and playing for the Solar Sox from Baltimore are:

Carter Baumler (#22 Orioles prospect per MLB)

Baumler was the Orioles 2020 Round 5 Draft Pick (133 overall) and has had an injury plagued start to his career. He made 4 starts for the Delmarva Shorebirds (A) in 2022, finishing with an 0-0 record, 1.54 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 11.2 innings. He did a rehab stint in the Florida Coast League (FCL) starting on 6/29/2023 before returning to Delmarva on 8/25. Baumler pitched to a 1-0 record over 3 games (2 starts) in Delmarva with a 5.00 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP over 9.0 innings. In 7 total games combined in ’23 (5 starts) he was 1-0 with a 3.18 ERA and 1.12 WHIP with 21 strikeouts over 17.0 innings.

TT Bowens:

Bowens was signed as a Minor League Free Agent on June 16th, 2020. He played at three levels of the system in 2023, donning uniforms for the Shorebirds, the Aberdeen Ironbirds (A+) and the Bowie Baysox (AA). Bowens combined line was .224/ .312/ .385 over 59 games with 8 homeruns, 31 runs scored, 8 homeruns, 19 RBI and 24 walks. He played the bulk of his games (47) in Bowie and hit .226/ .317/ .402 with 7 HR, 24 R, 15 RBI and 22 BB.

Billy Cook (#27 Orioles prospect per MLB):

Cook was the Orioles 2021 Round 10 Draft Pick (287 overall) and spent all of 2023 in Bowie where he had a line of .251/ .320/ .456 in 120 games for the Baysox. He hit a team leading 24 homeruns with 81 RBI, 64 runs scored and 42 walks.

Trey McGough:

McGlough was claimed off of MiLB waivers on December 7, 2022. He started the year in the Gulf Coast League (Rookie) and eventuall made his way all the way up to Bowie with stops in Delmarva and Aberdeen. His combined record was 1-2 over 7 games (4 starts) with a 3.05 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 22 strikeouts over 20.2 innings. McGlough appeared in 3 games for Aberdeen and 2 for Bowie.

Connor Pavolony:

Pavolony was the Orioles 2021 Round 7 Draft Pick (197 overall) and also played at three levels in 2023. He played the bulk of his games (20) in Bowie where he slashed .164/ .233/ .239 with 1 hoerun, 6 runs scored and 4 RBI. His combined 2023 line was .136/ .262/ .193 in 27 games with 1 HR, 10 R, 4 RBI and 12 BB.

Zach Peek:

Acquired in the Dylan Bundy trade to the Angels in 2019, Peek pitched at three levels in 2023. He finished the tear in Aberdeen wher he pitched to a 0-1 record in 3 starts. Peek threw 8.2 innings and finished with a 6.23 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 10 strikeouts and 8 walks. In five starts combined in ’23 he had an 0-1 record with a 5.91 ERA, 1.78 WHIP, 13 strikeouts and 9 walks over 10.2 innings.

John Rhodes (#20 Orioles prospect per MLB):

Rhodes was drafted in the 3rd round of the 2021 Draft (76 overall). A mainstay in the Bowie lineup in 2023, Rhodes slashed .228/ .323/ .422 in 408 at-bats over 108 games. He hit 17 homeruns, scored 60 runs and had 69 RBI to go along with 53 walks for the Baysox.

Carlos Tavera:

Tavera was drafted in the 5th round of the 2021 Draft (137 overall) and struggled at Bowie in 2023 where he finished with a 3-7 record over 23 games (17 starts) and 79.2 innings. He walked 58, struck out 89 and compiled a 1.61 WHIP with a 4.86 ERA.

Peter Van Loon:

Van Loon was drafted 467 overall in the 16th round of the 2021 Draft. He appeared in 18 games (11 starts) for the Baysox and over 53.2 innings compiled a 2-7 record with 1 save and a 6.04 ERA. Van Loon struck out 70, walked 23, allowed 12 homeruns and finished with a 1.49 WHIP. Opponents slashed .271/ .347/ .500 against him.
