The Baltimore Orioles hosted the New York Yankees at Ed Smith Stadium Saturday. A sellout crowd of 8,204 saw the Orioles defeat the Yankees by a score of 7-3 improving their Spring record to 8-1 in the process.
Cole Irvin made his second start of the Spring, surrendering three hits, walking one and hitting a batter in 3.0 innings of work. Irvin pitched with runners on base each inning and with the help of two double plays faced just 12 batters.
Julio Teheran made his spring Orioles debut and struck out one in 1.0 inning. Dillon Tate (1.0 IP, 1 K) and Nick Vespi (1.0 IP, 1 K) followed and kept the Yankees hitless while Luis Gonzalez (1.0 IP, 2 H) and Wandisson Charles (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K, 1 BB) kept the New Yorkers off of the scoreboard.. Tate was the eventual winning pitcher and is now 1-0 on the Spring.
The Yankees did mount a ninth inning rally off of RHP Logan Rinehart (0.2 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 1 K).
The offensive star was Austin Hays who went 2 for 3 with a homerun, 1 run scored and 3 RBI; his fifth inning solo homerun put the Birds on the scoreboard. He also had a hand in Baltimore’s four run sixth, knocking in two with a single to centerfield.
Kyle Stowers (1 for 2, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI) also went yard in the seventh inning.
Ryan Mountcastle showed off both his bat (2 for 3, 1 2B, 2 RBI) and his glove; he made a highlight worthy diving stop and put out in the fifth inning.
Heston Kjerstad (1 for 2, 1 R) had a web gem of his own in the first inning.
Three former Orioles farmhands, JC Escarra (0 for 2), Jahmai Jones (1 for 1, 1 R, 1 BB) and Jesus Liranzo (0.1 IP, 1 K) appeared in the Yankees lineup today.
