The Baltimore Orioles put up a five-spot on the Atlanta Braves in the first inning Wednesday in Sarasota only to fall in the end 7-5. Currently the Orioles Spring Training record stands at 15-4 (with 1 tie).
Atlanta’s Bryce Elder gifted the Orioles three walks in the first inning to load the bases with no outs. A forceout by Jordan Westburg (0 for 3, RBI) initiated the scoring before singles by Heston Kjerstad (1 for 3, R, RBI) and James McCann (1 for 3, R) gave the Orioles a 3-0 lead. Kolten Wong (1 for 3, 2B, 2 RBI) hit a two run double to plate the final two runs of the inning as well as what would prove to be the final runs overall.
After a three-up, three-down first, the Braves got to Baltimore’s starter Cole Irvin (0-1). Two second innings homeruns put three runs on the board for the Braves and two singles sandwiched between two double in the third put three more runs on the board. Irvin finished with the los and a line of 3.2 IP, 6 R, 7 H (2 HR), 4 BB and 3 K.
Despite putting runners on base in five of the final eight innings of the game, the Orioles could not score.
Connor Norby went 1 for 1 with a double.
Samuel Basallo went 1 for 1.
Dillon Tate (1.0 IP, BB, K WP), Danny Coulombe (1.2 IP, BB) and Keegan Akin (1.1 IP, 3 K) combined to hold the Braves scoreless.
The crowd of 8,031 was another sell-out for Ed Smith Stadium.
