The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Boston Red Sox in walk-off fashion 5-4 on Saturday in Sarasota. Dylan Beavers (1 for 1, RBI) hit a soft single that allowed Jud Fabian (1 for 1, R, RBI) to score the walk-off and winiing run.
Trailing 4-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, the Orioles struck immediately; Tyler Nevin (0 for 3, BB) opened with a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Frederick Bencosme (0 for 0, R), Coby Mayo (4 for 4, B, R) singled and then Fabian singled, allowing Bencosme to score. Mayo tried to advance to third on the play but was thrown out, allowing Fabian to get in scoring position at second base and ultimately score the winning run.
The Orioles jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first thanks to a play that Boston first-baseman Pablo Reyes couldn’t make on the back end of what should have been an inning ending double play by Anthony Santander (0 for 4, R). Cedric Mullins (1 for 3, R, BB) and Santander eventually scored thanks to that miscue.
The top of the second inning was an ugly one for starter Corbin Burnes. Burnes surrendered back-to-back homeruns to Bobby Dalbec and Wilyer Abreu to open the inning and then committed two throwing errors on pickoff attempts later in the inning. Burnes did recover and retired the side in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings to finish with a line of 5.0 IP, 4 R, 4 H, 2 HR, 2 K and 2 errors.
Four relievers, Craig Kimbrel (1.0 IP, BB, 2 K), Jacob Webb (1.1 IP, 2 BB, K), Kaleb Ort (0.2 IP, BB, K) and Matt Krook (1.0 IP, BB, 3 K) kept the Red Sox hitless and scoreless with Krook (1-0) earning the win.
The Orioles scored their third run on a bases loaded walk to Ramon Urias (1 for 2, 2 RBI, BB), leaving it to Beavers in the ninth.
