The Philadelphia Phillies (58-53) shutout the Baltimore Orioles 5-0 on Saturday night. A crowd of 37,751 witnessed the induction of Chris Davis, Storm Davis and the late Jim Russo into the Orioles Hall of Fame. Following the pre-game ceremony, the crowd, the inductees and their families as well as quite a few Orioles from the past watched the O’s lay an egg. With less than 48 hours to go until the MLB trade deadline (Mon. 8/3 @ 6 pm), tonight’s loss hurts but it is still unclear as to what the Front Office will do to the current roster.
The Orioles had accumulated all their hits by the seventh inning. Gunnar Henderson (1 for 3, BB, K) and Tyler O’Neill (1 for 3, BB) singled off of Phillies’ starter Cristopher Sanchez (14-4) and Dylan Beavers (1 for 1, SB) singled off of reliever Jonathan Bowlan. Seven consecutive Orioles’ batters were retired following the Beavers single and eight consecutive batters were retired between Henderson’s first inning single and his fourth inning walk.
Additionally, the Birds loaded the bases with two outs in both the fourth and sixth innings. In both instances Leody Taveras (0 for 2, 2 BB) recorded the final out of the inning. As a team, they struck out 14 times in the game with every starter with the exception of O’Neill did so at least once. Jackson Holliday and Pete Alonso each went 0 for 4 with 3 strike outs versus Phillies’ pitching.
Shane Baz (4-10) did all that he could do by allowing 1 run on 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 4 over 6.1 innings of work. He exited the game having thrown 99 pitches (68 K’s) and with the O’s trailing 1-0.
The bullpen duo of Grant Wolfram (0.1 IP, 2 R, 2 BB) and Andrew Kittredge (0.1 IP, 2 R, 3 H, BB, WP) allowed the game to get out of reach for an anemic Orioles offense.
