The Baltimore Orioles lost 4-2 to the Cleveland Guardians (11-9) on Thursday night. Through eight innings it really wasn’t much of a game as far as the Birds were concerned. Cleveland pitcher Parker Messick (3-0) allowed just a pair of walks through 8.0 innings and lost the no-hit bid in the ninth when Leody Taveras singled through the hole at second. A single by Blaze Alexander ended Messick’s night. Gunnar Henderson‘s sacrifice fly and Pete Alonso‘s double knocked in Taveras and Alexander respectively which pinned those runs on Messick. The game ended with Taylor Ward and Alonso stranded in scoring position.
Shane Baz (0-2) allowed 4 runs on 6 hits with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts across 6.0 innings. He was the victim of a two-run homerun by Jose Ramirez in the first inning. Baz retired nine Guardians in a row from the end of the first until the start of the fourth inning. He surrendered a run in each of the fifth and sixth innings and took the loss in the end.
Making his MLB debut in relief of Baz was Cameron Foster, who allowed 2 hits with a walk and 3 strikeouts over 1.2 innings. He threw 42 pitches (27 K’s) to 8 Cleveland batters.
The loss dropped the Orioles into third place in a tight American League East race.
