What Just Happened?!

On a Saturday when game time was moved up four hours to avoid the predicted inclement weather, the powers that be, in retrospect, probably wish the game remained in its original time slot and had been interrupted by the weather, or postponed all together.

In what was their worst loss since suffering a 24-2 defeat on Easter Sunday ’24 at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds, the Baltimore Orioles lost to the Boston Red Sox (10-17) by a score of 17-1.

Trailing 7-1 after eight innings, the Birds endured an 18 minute top half of the ninth that featured 10 hits, including three homeruns, 10 runs, 14 batters and a position player pitching. Weston Wilson entered the game in relief of Keegan Akin (1.0 IP, 6 H, HR, 6 R, 2 K) and coughed up a pair of Red Sox homeruns among the 4 hits he allowed. The game came to a merciful end with the Orioles going a meekly three-up, three-down in the bottom of the ninth. A good bit of the 33,582 fans in attendance avoided witnessing the ninth inning train wreck as many were seen heading to the exits after the eighth.

This loss was hung on starter Trevor Rogers (2-3) who lasted just 1.2 innings, tossing 47 of his 62 total pitches in the second inning. Nowhere near as impressive so far this season as he was in 2025, the lefty allowed 3 runs on 4 hits while walking 2 and striking out 2 with a velocity that topped out at 94 mph. He reached 2 strikes on 10 batters and retired 5 of those batters, 3 on contact and 2 on Ks.

Of the four relievers utilized today, Tyler Wells was the only one to not allow a run to Boston hitters. Albert Suarez, however, gave up 4 unearned runs over 4.0 innings.

Baltimore’s lone run came in the seventh inning after Boston starter Garrett Crochet (6.0 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 7 K) exited the game. A pair of single by Tyler O’Neill and Jeremiah Jackson led to a Leody Taveras RBI fielder’s choice that plated O’Neill. All this was a result of a throwing error by Caleb Durbin on Jackson’s groundball to third that allowed the runners to advance a base.

The hope is that Sunday’s game will be more like Friday’s as opposed to today’s.
