Orioles End Losing Skid In Miami

On a 72 degree Tuesday in Miami the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Miami Marlins (16-20) by a score of 9-7, ending their five game losing streak. The nine runs were one short of their total runs scored in the previous four games in Yankee Stadium.

Baltimore struck early, scoring 3 runs in the first inning on a 2-RBI double by Pete Alonso and a RBI double by Samuel Basallo. The Orioles did not lose the lead until Miami tied the contest at 7 each in the bottom of the eighth inning. Two runs in the ninth by the Orioles sealed the deal.

Basallo went 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, 1 run scored and 4 RBI and combined with Alonso, who went 2 for 3 with 2 doubles, 4 runs scored, 2 RBI and 2 walks to pace the Orioles’ offense. Basallo also threw out former Orioles prospect Connor Norby on an attempted steal of second base in the second inning. Basallo did commit a throwing error, however, on a steal attempt of third base in the eighth inning.

The duo also played a major part in Baltimore’s 2-run third inning with Basallo’s 2-RBI single that scored both Taylor Ward (walk) and Alonso (double) as well as the 2-run fifth. Basallo’s RBI-triple scored Alonso once again and Colton Cowser‘s fielder’s choice ground ball to short plated Basallo.

In the ninth Ward walked with one out, advanced to second on a two-out wild pitch and scored on Adley Rutschman‘s pinch-hit single. Leody Taveras plated Alonso with a RBI-single for an insurance run; Alonso had walked prior to Rutschman’s at-bat.

Chris Bassitt made the start against Miami and struggled through 4.0 innings, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits while walking 3, striking out 3, hitting 2 batters and throwing a wild pitch. Keegan Akin struck out 1 batter in the fifth inning.

Anthony Nunez pitched a clean sixth inning but was the victim of back-to-back Miami homeruns with one out in the seventh. Grant Wolfram then struck out 2 to get out of the inning.

Andrew Kittredge allowed an unearned run in the eighth before giving way to Rico Garcia (3-0) who walked 1 and struck out 2 in 1.1 innings of work to earn the win.

Kittredge has raised a red flag for allowing 8 runs, 7 earned, in 1.0 inning combined over two games since returning from the Injured List. What matters now is to get the pitching fixed while seeing a sustained offense; time will tell.
