The Baltimore Orioles dropped a third consecutive game Saturday night in Arlington, Texas to the Texas Rangers (59-58) by a score of 5-1. During this losing streak the Orioles scored a total of three runs on seventeen hits cumulatively as well as going a dismal 3 for 23 with runners in scoring position.
After drawing as close as two games under .500, the Orioles have seemingly done a 180 and are drifting backwards following the MLB trade deadline; the team had won the two games immediately after the deadline.
Baltimore scored their only run on the 13th pitch of the game by way of a two-out solo homerun by Jackson Holliday (2 for 3, 2B, BB). The closest the Orioles came to scoring after that was in the sixth and eighth innings when they had runners on first and second with two outs each time. A runner on second with two outs situation was wasted in the seventh inning as well.
A comedy of errors in the Rangers’ half of the second inning for all intents and purposes defined the loss as well providing a synopsis of this season’s defensive deficiencies.
Ezequiel Duran singled with one out and advanced all the way to third on a Kyle Bradish (7-11) throwing error on a pick-off attempt. Duran then scored on an Evan Carter fielder’s choice to short. A wild pitch by Bradish put Carter in scoring position at second base. Jake Burger then hit a groundball to the left side of the mound that both Bradish and Gunnar Henderson failed to field cleanly. Henderson’s errant throw to home allowed Carter to score. Two runs scored as a result of two errors in the same inning.
The score remained 2-1 until the eighth inning when Baltimore’s Grant Wolfram issued back-to-back walks with two outs. Corey Seager then touched Wolfram for a three-run homerun to right center field.
The Orioles then saw the game end with a meek three-up, three-down ninth inning.
Bradish, who suffered the loss, actually produced a quality start by allowing 2 runs, 1 earned, on 5 hitsacross 6.0 innings. He also struck out 4, hit a batter and threw a wild pitch.
Saturday’s loss was the second time in as many days that the Orioles offense failed to support a solid effort by their starting pitchers. As far as the fan base is concerned, the emotional rollercoaster continues.
