Entering Tuesday night’s game, the Baltimore Orioles had scored 26 runs combined over their previous four games. That offense was slowed down in a 3-1 loss to the New York Yankees (70-55) at Oriole Park. The game had the feel of a playoff game as Yankees manager Aaron Boone used two pinch-hitters, one pince runner, a substitute position player and five relief pitchers. Orioles manager Craig Albernaz played his usual late-game machinations, using a pair of pinch-hitters and one position player substitution.
The offense lacked firepower Tuesday, managing just four hits in total, and served to let down starter Shane Baz (4-13). Baz pitched 6.1 innings and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and 10 strikeouts. Trent Grisham touched Baz for a solo homerun in the third inning. Additionally, the only offensive support provided to Baz came in the form of three hits over the course outing.
Two of those hits were singles by Leody Taveras and Pete Alonso. The third hit was a solo homerun from Coby Mayo in the third inning that was his 17th homerun of the season and travelled 407 ft. to left field. Mayo’s homerun tied the game at 1-1 and countered Grisham’s in the top of the inning.
Baz exited the game with runners on first and second and one out Josh Walker came in to relieve Baz and immediately walked the bases loaded. Grisham then hit a two-out, two-RBI single for what proved to be the winning runs.
The Orioles, who were 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position, mounted two threats, runners on first and second with one out in the second inning and runners on first and second with no outs in the seventh. Taveras added the Orioles fourth hit in the seventh inning.
The streaky ways continue as the Orioles have now lost two games in a row after winning three in a row.
