The Baltimore Orioles celebrated the 60-year anniversary of the 1966 World Championship Team. Representing that team in pre-game ceremonies were Jim Palmer, Boog Powell and Eddie Watt. The game paid homage to games three and four of the series with its 1-0 final score. Unlike in 1966, the Orioles were on the losing end to the Boston Red Sox (77-65).
Friday’s game featured a total of 258 pitches thrown by the seven pitchers who took the mound. As it turned out, the game was over after the second pitch of the game. Baltimore starter Shane Baz (5-15) threw a 93.9 mph 4-seam fastball to Boston’s Mickey Gasper who hit the pitch 375 ft. to right field for his eighth homerun of the season.
Baz allowed the one run on four hits while walking two and striking out six over 6.1 innings. He threw 95 of the 258 pitches with 61 of them for strikes.
The Orioles were limited to six hits in the game with Blaze Alexander accounting for three of them. He also was involved in a bench and bullpen clearing discussion in the eighth inning when Boston’s Nick Sogard took exception to his slide into second base on an inning-ending double play.
Baltimore went three-up, three-soen in the first, seventh, and ninth innings with threats coming in the third inning when they had runners at the corners with two outs and in the fifth with runners on first and second with two outs.
Coby Mayo (1 for 3), Gunnar Henderson (1 for 4) and Christian Encarnacion-Strand (1 for 4) recorded Baltimore’s remaining hits.
