The Baltimore Orioles completed their latest trip to the Big Apple with a 7-1 victory over the New York Mets (69-83) Wednesday night. The win capped off a three-game sweep of the Mets and kept the Orioles in the conversation for the third AL Wild Card spot.
The game was a repeat of Tuesday’s game in that the same three players who hit balls over the Citi Field fences did the same in Wednesday’s game.
Pete Alonso (1 for 4) hit his 37th homerun of the season in the first inning. His career homerun number 301 was a solo blast travelled 410 ft. and landed in the second deck of the stadium.
Jeremiah Jackson (1 for 4) hit a two-run homerun with one out in the second inning. Jackson was playing again because the Orioles put Jackson Holliday on the 10-day IL with left wrist inflammation.
Completing the trifecta was Christian Encarnacion-Strand (3 for 4, 2 2B, 3 RBI) with his two-out, two-run homerun in the third inning. CES doubled and scored on Jackson’s second-inning homerun and doubled again in the ninth.
Batting behind CES was Samuel Basallo (2 for 4, 2 RBI), who went back-to-back with his 18th homerun in the third inning. He also drove in CES with a RBI-single in the ninth.
Baltimore’s homerun party made for an easy night for starter Chris Bassitt (8-5). He earned the win for a 6.2 inning performance in which he allowed a run on five hits and a walk while striking out six and committing a fourth-inning balk. That balk moved Jared Young into scoring position which allowed him to score on a Marcus Semien single.
Once again, the bullpen shutdown the Mets over the final 2.1 innings. Anthony Nunez, despite throwing a wild pitch, finished the seventh inning for Bassitt. Josh Walker and Yennier Cano both allowed a hit in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively.
While still having three teams to jump over, the Orioles are now 2.5 games behind the Chicago White Sox (77-75) in the Wild Card race. With nine games left in the season, will the Orioles continue to string the fans along or will they make a run? Stay tuned.
