Imagine if you will, you are a MLB pitcher and you throw an 8.0 inning game and in that game you allow a run on three hits, walk one and strike out ten. It would be reasonable to expect a win after a performance like that. This, however, is the 2026 Baltimore Orioles and their reality does not always meet expectations.
The pitcher who put up that line was Trevor Rogers (10-11) and because the supporting offense did not show up, he was the victim of a 1-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers (97-58). Rogers threw 99 pitches (72 K’s) and induced 17 swing and misses.
The Brewers scored the game’s only run in the second inning when former Oriole Joey Ortiz hit a line drive to right field that eluded Rece Hinds for a one-out triple. Ortiz scored on a Gary Sanchez groundout to third base.
Credit must be given to Milwaukee’s starter Robert Gasser (5-5) who limited the O’s to 3 hits while walking 3, striking out 2 and hitting a batter over 7.0 scoreless innings. He went toe-to-toe with Rogers by throwing 107 pitches (64 K’s) as well.
The Orioles went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position and stranded 6 base runners. They had runners on first and second with no outs in the seond but a ground out double play and another ground out ended the threat. With the bases loaded and one out in the sixth, another ground out double play ended the inning and the threat. Hinds doubled in the seventh inning with one out but moved no further.
Gunnar Henderson (1 for 4) goubled to lead off the second inning, so half of the O’s hits went for extra-bases.
The lack of offense from this lineup, while it has manifested itself so often this season, is still very frustrating.
The sad part of Saturday’s game is that Rogers pitched a gem in what very well could be his last start at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, as he is set to hit free agency at the end of the season, and had nothing to show for it, except the fact that he pitched his a$$ off.
