Friday’s contest with the Tampa Bay Rays was tied at 5 a piece entering the 8th inning. Three relief pitchers and 5 runs later, the Orioles had dug themselves a hole that they could not get out of. The Birds got one of those runs back in their half of the 8th but that was all as the Orioles lost by a score of 10-6.
The 8th inning started with Paul Fry (0.0 IP, 3 R, 1 H, 2 BB) on the mound. A single, a wild pitch and two consecutive walks loaded the bases and brought Dillon Tate (0.1 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 1 BB) into the game. Tate retired just one of the five batters he faced and exited with the Rays leading 10-5 with 1 out. Marcos Diplan (1.2 IP, 3 K) made his MLB debut by relieving Tate and finishing out the game. When all was said and done, Fry was tagged with the loss, his fourth of the year.
The Orioles got a run back with an Richie Martin (1 for 3, 2 RBI) sac fly following three consecutive singles. Ramon Urias (1 for 5) singled in the 9th inning but that was all the Birds could muster.
Pedro Severino led the offense with a 3 for 4, 1 homerun, 1 run scored, 1 RBI night while Austin Hays homered as well in a 1 for 5, 1 run scored, 1 RBI effort. Hays also made a spectacular diving catch on a ball off Yandy Diaz’s bat and got up and nearly picked off Jordan Luplow at third base.
Trey Mancini went 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and a run scored while Jorge Mateo went 2 for 4 with a triple and 1 RBI. Mateo entered the game as a defensive replacement in the 3rd inning for Ryan Mountcastle (1 for 1, 1 RBI) who was removed due to the concussion protocol; he was tagged in the head on a 1st inning steal attempt.
John Means started and lasted 5.0 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 8 hits while walking 1 and striking out 5. Five of the O’s six runs were scored in support of Means.
