The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Cleveland Guardians (11-10) in comeback fashion by a score of 6-4 on Friday. The Birds plated all six of their runs in the eighth inning. which was significant following a four-run seventh inning by the Guardians.
Cleveland’s seventh inning began with Steven Kwan reaching first base on a Jeremiah Jackson fielding error. With Grant Wolfram pitching, a double and an intentional walk loaded the bases. He struck out the next batter before giving way to Anthony Nunez. Nunez struck out the first batter he faced and then surrendered a grand-slam homerun to Daniel Schneemann. Jackson’s error put three unearned runs on Wolfram’s ledger.
In the Baltimore eighth Taylor Ward walked, Pete Alonso was hit by a pitch and Dylan Beavers walked to load the bases with no outs. A Johnathan Rodriguez sacrifice fly allowed Ward to score. Leody Taveras walked to load the bases again via a successful challenge of a strike call. Weston Wilson hit a two-run double to leftfield, drawing the Birds within a run. Jackson then redeemed himself for the earlier error by hitting a three-run homerun 390 ft. to left-center.
Making his fourth start of the eason, Chris Bassitt gave the team 5.0 innings of 4 hit ball. He walked 4, struck out 2 and threw a wild pitch as well.
Rico Garcia (2-0) pitched a clean eighth inning to record the win and Ryan Helsley closed out the ninth for his 6th save.
