The Baltimore Orioles lost 8-4 to the Cleveland Guardians (13-10) on Sunday and as such, lost the series 3 games to 1. Once again the Orioles’ bats were limited, compiling just 5 hits in the game. Three of those hits came in Baltimore’s four-run fifth inning.
The fifth inning opened with a Coby Mayo walk followed by a Sam Huff single. One out later Taylor Ward homered to left field, his first in an Orioles uniform. He finished the day 2 for 5 with a run scored and 3 RBI. A Pete Alonso single, a Johnathan Rodriguez walk and a Cleveland throwing error on Jeremiah Jackson‘s ground ball loaded the bases. Dylan Beavers hit into a fielder’s choice that allowed Alonso to score the fourth run of the inning.
Sadly the Orioles managed just one walk over the final four innings.
Trevor Rogers (2-2) made the start and allowed an unearned run to score in the third inning when he missed tagging first base after fielding a throw from Alonso on an Austin Hedges grounder. Hedges advanced to third on a Brayan Rocchio single and scored on a Steven Kwan sacrifice fly.
Rogers was victimized by Jose Ramirez who touched him for solo homeruns in both the fourth and fifth innings. The fourth inning also saw Rogers allow a walk, a single and a two-RBI double with one out following Ramirez’s homerun. A two-out single plated Cleveland’s fifth run.
Tagged with the loss, Rogers allowed 6 runs, 5 earned on 6 hits with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work.
Tyler Wells struck out 5 of the 6 batters he faced in relief while Cameron Foster allowed a pair of runs with two outs in the eighth; Cleveland loaded the bases to start the inning and then Foster struck out two before allowing a 2 RBI single by Rocchio.
For a second game in a row the Orioles struck out in double digits (12).
