The Baltimore Orioles presented themselves well for a national audience on Thursday night. Their game with the Seattle Mariners (36-34) was part of ESPN’s exclusive package of games on this night. On display Thursday was the Orioles’ offense in a 7-5 win over the Mariners.
Seattle opened the game with Cole Young sending the third pitch he saw 364 ft. into right field for his fifth homerun of the season.
The Orioles struck back in the third inning by scoring six runs. Colton Cowser opened the inning with a solo homerun to left center field. A pair if singles by Jackson Holliday and Taylor Ward followed by a walk to Gunnar Henderson loaded the bases. Seattle starter Bryan Woo then unleased a wild pitch that allowed Holliday to score. Seattle countered with four runs in the top of the fourth, ending the night for Baltimore’s Kyle Bradish who allowed 5 runs on 7 hits, including 3 homeruns, with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts.
Rutschman accounted for the Orioles’ seventh run with a RBI-single in the fifth. In the end, that run earned the win for Tyler Wells (1-1) who pitched 3.0 innings of scoreless basebal; he walked 1 while striking out 4.
Nine of Baltimore’s eleven batters were retired over the final 3.0 innings, conversely 12 of Seattle’s 16 batters were retied to end the game. Rico Garcia, Grant Wolfram and Andrew Kittredge combined to finish the game and preserve the win.
The offensive star was Rutschman, who went 2 for 3 with a double, 1 run scored, 3 RBI and a walk.
