Opportunities Missed

On a Sunday that saw the Baltimore Orioles get a quality start and eight of their nine starters record a hit, the win still eluded them as the San Diego Padres (37-33) scored a 5-2 win in front of 20,611 fans at Camden Yards. As a result, the Birds finished the homestand with a 3-4 record.

Trevor Rogers (3-7) made the start and allowed 2 runs on 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out 4 across 6.0 innings. He left the game with San Diego leading 2-1 after keeping pace with their starter Walker Buehler (5.0 IP, R, 6 H, 5 K). Rogers gave up those runs as a result of an unlucky bounce in the third inning. With a runner on first and two outs, Rodolfo Duran hit a ball that landed on the second base bag and bounced over Jeremiah Jackson‘s head; Jackson was positioned to make the play and possibly end yje inning. Instead, the hit resulted in a RBI double with Rodolfo subsequently scoring on a single by Fernando Tatis Jr.

Jackson redeemed himself in a way even though it was not his fault that the ball bounced the way it did, by homering to lead off the bottom of the fifth.

Duran further was a pain in the side of the Orioles when he hit a two-run homerun off of Rico Garcia in the seventh inning, his second in as many days.

Blaze Alexander, who was 2 for 4 in the game, doubled to open the bottom of the seventh and scored on a Gunnar Henderson single.

The Orioles were 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position and left 8 runners on base. They squandered scoring opportunities in the second, third and fifth innings. Missed opportunities that were significant because the game was essentially over once Padres’ closer Mason Miller entered the game with two outs in the eighth; he recorded the four out save for his 19th of the season.

The ninth inning wasn’t kind to Henderson as he was charged with a pair of errors, one that resulted in San Diego scoring an unearned run. His first error allowed Will Wagner to reach base and his second allowed Wagner to advance to third. Wagner scored on a Tatis Jr sacrifice fly to Alexander who made an on-point throw to Samuel Basallo. Initially called out, Wagner was deemed safe after San Diego challenged the call. Henderson did go 2 for 4 from the plate.

Adley Rutschman was the only starter to go hitless.
