THE ORIOLES HAVE WON SIX IN A ROW! THE ORIOLES HAVE WON SIX IN A ROW! Who is this team and what have you done with the Orioles?
In a game that was tied at 1 after nine innings, the Baltimore Orioles kept at it and won 4-2 in 11 innings over the Houston Astros (47-53). The O’s have now won six games in a row and are just 3 games below .500, a position they found themselves last on June 12th.
The Orioles scored their first run and their only run in nine innings in the fourth when Dylan Beavers (2 for 3, RBI) doubled home Pete Alonso, who walked to open the inning and and eventually stole second base. The Orioles did miss further scoring in the inning; with Samuel Basallo (hit by pitch) on third and Beavers on second with no outs, a groundout, a pop out and a strikeout brought the inning to a close.
Baltimore added a run in the tenth when Jeremiah Jackson knocked in Leody Taveras (1 for 1, R, RBI) with a successful sacrifice bunt. Further damage was avoided when the O’s could not cash in on a runners on second and third with one out situation. The Astros answered that run with one of their own in the bottom of the tenth on a RBI-ground rule double by Yordan Alvarez. Houston loaded the bases with no one out and failed to score on a Jose Altuve fly ball to right field. Tyler O’Neill (1 for 2, RBI), one of just two outfielders as Manager Craig Albernaz opted for five infielders, caught the fly ball and threw a bullet to home where Basallo tagged Nick Allen out at home. A calm Andrew Kittredge fielded a bunt by LaMonte Wade Jr and threw to first base in time to keep a run off the board.
Back to back RBI singles by O’Neill and Taveras provided the winning runs and made Kittredge (1-1) the winning pitcher.
Cam Sanders pitched a clean 11th inning to earn his first save as a Baltimore Oriole.
Lost in all the late game excitement was the starting effort by Trevor Rogers. In another quality start, Rogers allowed a run on 7 hits, walked 1 and struck out 8 across 6.1 innings of work.
Ain’t the beer cold!!!
