Aiming to set a new franchise record for consecutive games won, the Boston Red Sox (52-49) will have to be content with equaling the 80 year record of 15 in a row. Duplicating what the Red Sox did in the first inning of game one, the Baltimore Orioles scored four runs in the first inning of game 2 on their way to a convincing 5-1 win.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Boston starter Eduardo Rivera (0-1) threw a wild pitch that allowed Pete Alonso (1 for 5, 2B) to score. Dylan Beavers (2 for 4) then cleared the bases with a 2-RBI single and ultimately scored on a Johnathan Rodriguez (2 for 4) RBI-double.
Boston scored its lone run in the fourth inning. Willson Contreras hit a ground-rule double with two outs and scored on a RBI-single by Masataka Yoshida.
The Orioles scored their fifth and final run in the seventh when Gunnar Henderson (1 for 3, 2 R, BB) tripled to start the inning and scored on a Jovani Moran wild pitch.
Making sure that this offense prevailed was newly minted (5 year, $90M extension) starter Kyle Bradish (7-9). He limited the Bo Sox to just that one run on 4 hits while walking 1, striking out 4 and hitting a batter in a 6.0 inning quality start. Bradish faced 23 batters and dispatched of them with 89 pitches (58 K’s).
The bullpen trio of Yennier Cano, Andrew Kittredge and Tyler Wells each pitched 1.0 inning and combined to allow just 1 hit to the Red Sox while finishing what Bradish started.
The August 3rd MLB trade deadline is fast approaching and the Orioles must put up or shut up.
