Tuesday’s game at Camden Yards gave fans their first glimpse of the Baltimore Orioles revamped 2026 lineup. While not exactly the fire sale of 2025, the 2026 Trade Deadline deals saw four players leave and a player acquired just five days prior included in one of those trades.
Baltimore had a new catcher as well as a new left fielder in the lineup as well as a familiar face, recalled from the Norfolk Tides, taking the mound. In a strange juxtaposition, the Orioles were facing Grayson Rodriguez, their 2018 first round draft pick, who was traded to the Los Angeles Angels (43-70) in the off-season for Taylor Ward, one of the players traded away at the deadline.
The Orioles defeated the Angels 3-1 Tuesday night with a lineup that included starting pitcher Cade Povich (2-1), catcher Carlos Narvaez and left fielder Christian Franklin.
Povich, who probably is unsure as to how long he will remain with the big club, made the most of his opportunity by holding the Angels scoreless over 7.0 innings. He threw 88 pitches (60 K’s) and allowed 7 hits, walked 1, struck out 7 and picked a pair of runners off first base to earn the win.
Despite going 0 for 2 and getting hit by a pitch, Narvaez did a decent job in handling four unfamiliar pitchers.
Franklin, making his MLB debut, went 0 for 2, walked, scored a run and stole a base. He also navigated left field quite well.
The Orioles won the game despite recording just 4 hits. Pete Alonso (1 for 4) put the O’s on the board with a bases loaded single in the third inning; Franklin and Colton Cowser (1 for 3) scored on the play. Tyler O’Neill (1 for 1) added a pinch-hit homerun in the eighth that countered the Angels’ lone run in the top of the inning. That run came on back-to-back one-out doubles by Nolan Schanuel and Vaughn Grissom with Andrew Kittredge pitching.
Yennier Cano allowed a hit and struck out 2 in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.
As the dust begins to settle on the 2026 Trade deadline transactions, one thing is clear. Trading away the 2019 #1 overall draft pick, Adley Rutschman, weeks after saying he was wanted in Baltimore forever, is a damning indictment of the front office under Mike Elias. After all, Rutschman was the first draft pick of the Elias regime as well as the purported cornerstone of the franchise. The question is what went wrong and why does player development stagnate? It seems that the talent pipeline gets clogged up at some point.
