The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Los Angeles Angels (43-71) on Wednesday night by a score of 5-2. The win was a result of a trio of homeruns and a quality start. These two consecutive wins coming out of the Trade Deadline hopefully are a sign that the team can move past the events of the past few days and come out on the other side a better team and a team gaining momentum.
Trevor Rogers (7-7) gave the Orioles his tenth quality start of the season and the fourth in his last five starts. He earned the win, his seventh, by limiting the Angels to 2 runs on 3 hits over 6.0 innings. Rogers struck out 9 without issuing a walk; Jose Siri did touch him up for a sixth inning solo homerun, however.
The Angels’ second run came on a Wade Meckler RBI-single in the seventh inning.
Back-to-back homeruns in the fourth inning put the Birds on the board. Tyler O’Neill (1 for 3) hit a 426 ft. 2 run-homerun to left center field and Coby Mayo (2 for 4) followed that up with a 436 ft. solo shot to left center field of his own.
Leody Taveras (1 for 1) added a pinch-hit two-run homerun in the eighth inning to give the Orioles an added cushion.
Scoring on both the O’Neill and Taveras homeruns was Gunnar Henderson (1 for 2, BB). Christian Encarnacion-Strand added a double in three at-bats. That was the extent of the Orioles’ offense.
Andrew Kittredge pitched a clean ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the season.
Newly acquired Alex Hoppe allowed a hit in 0.2 innings of the seventh inning in his Orioles debut.
If the 2026 Trade Deadline is to be deemed a success the Orioles must first ride this little bit of momentum and fulfill the contention of Mike Elias that they are still a playoff team. Secondly, they need to find a way to successfully develop the prospects that were received in the trades.
