The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Minnesota Twins (59-62) by a score of 5-2 Tuesday night at Target Field. All five of the Orioles’ runs came the way of the long ball.
Pete Alonso (3 for 4, BB) hit a two-run homerun, his 26th of the season, in the first inning. Gunnar Henderson (3 for 5, 2B, 2 R) did the same in the in the second inning; his two-run shot travelled 409 ft. to right field. The big blast came in the third inning when Christian Encarnacion-Strand (3 for 4, SB) hit the longest homerun by an Orioles batter this season, a bomb to center field that travelled 460 ft. at 109 mph. The pitch CES turned around was an 82.8 mph change up from Bailey Ober (7-4).
The three longballs were in support of Brandon Young (9-3), the winning starter. Young’s gutsy performance resulted in a quality start, his sixth of the season. Tossing 104 pitches (69 K’s), he allowed 2 runs, 1 earned, on 6 hits with 3 walks, 4 strike outs and a hit batter over 6.0 innings.
Andrew Kittredge struck out Josh Bell to end the game and earn his 6th save of the season.
Tyler O’Neill (1 for 4) and Yohel Pozo (1 for 1, R) rounded out the Orioles’ hit total.
Amazingly, both teams went the final 6.0 innings of the game without scoring.
Tuesday’s win was the Orioles’ fourth in their last ten games and they have a 4-4 record since the MLB trade deadline.
