The Baltimore Orioles lost a second consecutive game to the Colorado Rockies (54-86) Wednesday afternoon. Playing from behind all game, the Rockies scored a run in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at 3 each and added three runs in the bottom of the eleventh to complete a 6-5 extra inning victory. With the loss, the O’s finished the road trip with a respectable 6-3 record.
The Orioles scored three runs in the third inning and then went scoreless for the next seven innings before scoring a pair of runs in the eleventh.
Blaze Alexander (3 for 5, R, RBI) singled to open the third inning and scored following back-to-back one-out singles by Jackson Holliday (2 for 6, R) and Pete Alonso (1 for 4, R, RBI, BB). A two-out, two-RBI double by the newest Oriole, Luis Robert Jr (1 for 5, R, 2 RBI), completed the Orioles’ scoring.
The Orioles had a base runner in every inning after except the ninth. Their only threat came in the seventh when they had runners on first and second with one out. They also failed to take advantage of the ghost runner in the tenth.
The Orioles eleventh began with Robrt Jr on second as the ghost runner. Samuel Basallo (1 for 4, RBI, BB) knocked him in with a single. With Leody Taveras pinch-running for Basallo, one-out back-to-back singles by Dylan Beavers (1-for-5) and Alexander advanced Taveras to third and then drove him in for the team’s fifth run, respectively.
Starting pitcher Trevor Rogers deserved better for the effort he provided the Orioles. He allowed a pair of runs on six hits with a career high eleven strikeouts over 6.2 innings and left the game with a 3-2 lead. Pitching for the save in the ninth, Andrew Kittredge gave up a two-out double to Cole Carrigg and then followed that up with a two-strike RBI double to Zac Veen.
Grant Wolfram (6-3) came on to pitch the eleventh inning and immediately gave up a lead-off RBI single to TJ Rumfield. Two outs later he allowed an Adael Amador double followed by a two-RBI single to Brett Sullivan with two strikes to give the Rockies the walk-off win.
Two separate occasions where the Orioles were a strike away from the win. The pitching staff needs to find a way to consistently close the door on the opposition when given the opportunity.
