What we know:
The crown jewel of the Machado trade by most accounts, this Cuban outfielder is about potential and tools than pure production at this point. Solid average tools across the board, but no real plus tool right now. Despite being his 3rd full minor league season, still a bit raw in many aspects of the game though his hit tool and ability to take a walk is probably his best overall attributes as a player. Had a run in with the coaching staff due to some things early on, but made the corrections and became a hard worker on and off the field afterwards. The Orioles worked on some swing things in the instructional leagues to help him create backspin and carry on the ball which should increase power production. Can be a plus runner at times and plays a solid average defense in right field.
What we don’t know:
Will his power develop? If he’s a 12-18 homer guy he’ll need to hit for high average and get on base at a high clip. Will his new found work ethic follow him to spring training next year? Can he become a better base stealer with more experience?
What we think:
Diaz has a chance to be solid average big league corner outfielder with 18-25 homer, .285/.340/.780 potential. Although he can flash plus speed, he’s not a base stealer but he could end up stealing 8-10 bases a year. Thinking of comps, Phil Bradley comes to mind.
