The Baltimore Orioles fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks (11-8) 8-5 in 10 innings Wednesday afternoon on Jackie Robinson Day. Manager Craig Albernaz fielded what at best could be described as a “B” lineup; three outfielders making debuts at the position, a few players making their Orioles debut and a catcher who is third on the depth chart.

Back-to-back doubles by Coby Mayo and Sam Huff in the second inning put the O’s on the board. Mayo’s double came after he was charged an unsuccessful challenge when it appeared that he was just adjusting his batting helmet. MLB needs to address the issue and possibly change the pitch challenge method.

Arizona scored a pair of runs on a triple by Adrian Del Castillo that Weston Wilson misplayed in left field in the third inning.

Jeremiah Jackson‘s RBI single drew the O’s even in the bottom of the inning. He also launched a two-run homerun in the fifth and ended his day 2 for 5 with a run scored and 3 RBI.

Arizona scored a run in both the sixth and seventh innings before Gunnar Henderson singled, stole second and scored on a Leody Taveras single to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh.

Baltimore was shutout over the final three innings, losing when Tyler Wells (0-1) allowed three runs in the top of the tenth. Wells took the loss for allowing 3 runs, 2 earned, on 3 hits, including a two-run homerun by Del Castillo.

All this served to let down starter Kyle Bradish who allowed 4 runs on 8 hits with a walk and 4 strikeouts across 6.0 innings. His only clean inning came in the fifth when he induced three groundouts.

In relief, Grant Wolfram faced just four batters and allowed a run on 2 hits and Anthony Nunez (1.0 IP, K) and Ryan Helsley (1.0 IP, 2 K) continued to shine.

If only the rest of the team would shine likewise.
