The Yankees Did Yankees’ Things

Whatever momentum and good mojo the Baltimore Orioles gained by Monday’s win was stopped on Tuesday with their 6-2 loss to the New York Yankees (27-16). On this night the Bronx Bombers were not Mr. Rogers friends.

New York struck early against tonight’s starter Trevor Rogers (2-4) with Paul Goldschmidt‘s 402 ft. homerun to left field on Rogers’ first pitch of the game, a 93.9 mph 4-seam fastball. A five-run third led to Rogers’ downfall. A single and two one-out walks loaded the bases for Cody Bellinger who knocked in a run on his ground ball force out. Amed Rosario singled in a run before Trent Grisham hit a 397 ft. three-run homerun to center.

Rogers allowed two Yankees’ batters to reach base with two outs in the fourth before striking out Ben Rice to end the inning as well as his night. The final line on Rogers was 6 runs on 6 hits (2 HR) with 3 walks and 3 strike outs over 4.0 innings and 73 pitches (46 K’s). Rogers took the loss despite four relievers combining to cover 5.0 scoreless innings.

Baltimore was gifted the bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the third due to some sloppy defense by the Yankees. A fly out and a double play ended the threat and returned the gift to New York.

Taylor Ward (2 for 4, 1 run scored) doubled to start the sixth inning and scored on Samuel Basallo‘s two-out RBI single. Tyler O’Neill (1 for 4, RBI) then doubled home Basallo. Continuing his hot streak, Basallo went 2 for 4 with 1 run scored and 1 RBI. He is now slashing .277/ .338/ .479 on the season.

Pete Alonso (1 for 4) singled in the eighth inning to finish the Orioles’ offensive production.

Coby Mayo (0 for 2) worked the only walk against New York pitching. Collectively, the Orioles were 1 for 12 with runners in scoring position and struck out 8 times.

The Orioles have been out scored 47-15 in six games against the Yankees.

Is it time to invoke Yogi Berra‘s saying that “it gets late out there early”?
