The Baltimore Orioles returned home to a soggy Camden Yards Friday night to begin a 10-game home stand. Neither the persistent rain nor the Detroit Tigers (20-32) could stop the Birds as they homered their way to a 7-4 win. Producing 14 hits, including a pair of homeruns, the Orioles’ offense did not resemble recent versions of itself. The win broke Baltimore’s 3 game losing streak while extending Detroit’s losing streak to 7 games.
Pete Alonso opened the scoring with a 3-run homerun in the third inning, his tenth homerun of the season, on his way to a 1 for 3 night with 4 RBI and a walk.
The fourth inning started with back-to-back singles by Leody Taveras (2 for 3, 2B, BB) and Colton Cowser (1 for 2). A balk by former Oriole Jack Flaherty (0-6) allowed Taveras to score, tying the game at 4.
With one out in the fourth, Jackson Holliday (2 for 3, 2 R, BB) hit his first homerun of the season, a two-run shot that just made it out at the 333 ft. mark in left field. The ball landed at the base of the left field foul pole.
The inning continued with a Taylor Ward single and an Adley Rutschman (2 for 5) double. Alonso was intentionally walked with two outs to load the bases. That threat ended on a Samuel Basallo strikeout.
Baltimore’s final run was the result of an Alonso sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.
Gunnar Henderson went 3 for 5 with a double and 2 runs scored.
The night did not start well as Keegan Akin surrendered a lead-off homerun to Kevin McGonigle on the first pitch of the game.
Making his second appearance following an opener, Chris Bassitt (4-3) allowed 3 runs on 6 hits with 4 strikeouts over 4.1 innings to earn the win.
The bullpen quartet of Rico Garcia, Yennier Cano, Tyler Wells and Anthony Nunez combined to pitch the final 3.2 innings and did not allow a run or a hit. Nunez was credited with the save, his 3rd of the season.
