The Baltimore Orioles saw their losing streak extended to four games with Tuesday’s 6-5 loss in 10 innings to the Seattle Mariners (36-32). Trailing 3-0 after six innings, the Orioles saw Seattle’s lead become 4-0 in the top of the seventh. Baltimore countered that run with one of their own in the bottom of the inning. Two runs by Baltimore in the bottom of the ninth sent the game into extra innings.
A Randy Arozarena two-run homerun off Rico Garcia (3-1) in the top of the 10th proved to be the difference in the game after all the Orioles could do was score 1 run on a Leody Taveras RBI-single in the bottom of the 10th. With runners on first and third, Baltimore thought the game was tied after a Jeremiah Jackson fielder’s choice. Blaze Alexander was called out at home and Manager Craig Albernaz‘s challenge of the play failed. Tyler O’Neill struck out swinging to end the game.
O’Neill, who went 1 for 4 with a double and a walk on the night, had quite an up and down experience. He walked and was tagged out at home in the second, he grounded out to third in the fourth, he hit into a double play and was booed by the fans in the seventh, he hit a ground-rule double in the ninth, putting runners at second and third before recording the final out of the game.
Baltimore opened the scoring in the first on a Taveras bases-loaded sacrifice fly. A pair of runners were stranded, however. The team also saw 14 straight batters retired in the middle innings.
Coby Mayo scored on a wild pitch in the seventh and hit a solo homerun in the ninth.
Samuel Basallo‘s fielder’s choice in the ninth allowed Jackson to score and tie the game. What appeared to be a comeback in the making ended with a Pete Alonso ground ball with the bases loaded. Gunnar Henderson was forced out at second, a play the review confirmed once again.
Lost in all the late game dramatics was the starting effort put in bu Trevor Rogers. He allowed 3 runs on 6 hits with a walk and 3 strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. The runs all came on a Mitch Garver three-run homerun in the fourth inning.
In a recurring theme, the Orioles went 1 for 11 with runners in scoring position while leaving 10 runners on base.
