The O’s Overcome The Heat And The Padres

The announced gametime temperature on Friday was 89 degrees even though the daytime temperature was a record 97 degrees. The humidity made things uncomfortable especially for the 25,458 fans in attendance. The Baltimore Orioles overcame the weather as well as the San Diego Padres (35-33) in a 7-3 win.

The game didn’t start well as the Padres leadoff batter, Fernando Tatis Jr, reached base on a fielding error by Coby Mayo. Tatis Jr then stole second and advanced to third on a Xander Bogaerts single. He then scored on a double by Baltimore native Gavin Sheets.

The Orioles immediately restored order in the home half of the inning by scoring three runs. Taylor Ward walked to open tha inning and advanced to third on Gunnar Henderson‘s single. Ward scored on a sacrifice fly by Adley Rutschman. Henderson was then caught stealing second. Pete Alonso walked and then Samuel Basallo hit a two-run homerun to right center field.

The Orioles parlayed a pair of walks and 3 singles into 3 more runs in the second inning. Jackson Holliday‘s sacrifice fly scored Colton Cowser and Tyler O’Neill (2 for 4) and Henderson both scored on Alonso’s 2-RBI single.

Baltimore scored their final run in notable fashion in the fourth inning. Batting with two outs, Henderson hit a homerun 386 ft. to right field. Making the homerun memorable was the fact that it was the 100th of Henderson’s career. Henderson finished the night 3 for 3 with a run scored, 1 RBI and a walk and became the fourth youngest Oriole to reach 100 homeruns.

Recording the win was starter Shane Baz (4-6), who allowed 3 runs, 2 earned, on 6 hits with 2 walks and a strikeout over 5.0 innings. When asked about getting seven runs, Baz said “any time you get seven runs as a starter, the world is your oyster.”

Anthony Nunez, Keegan Akin, Yennier Cano and Andrew Kittredge each pitched 1.0 inning to close out the game.
