Entering Wednesday’s game at Comerica Park, the Baltimore Orioles had not scored since Tyler O’Neill‘s pinch-hit homerun to lead off the sixth inning on Monday. That streak extended into the seventh inning on Wednesday for a total of 18.2 innings without stepping foot on home plate. That initial run, coming with two outs in the seventh, led to a 12 inning 10-9 win over the Detroit Tigers (51-58).
Tasked with facing Detroit’s Tarik Skubal, Leody Taveras (1 for 4, R, RBI) singled in Gunnar Henderson (1 for 5, BB) to not only break the ice but to chase Skubal from the game. With Coby Mayo (2 for 3, 2 R, 2 RBI, 2 BB) on base via a walk that preceded the Taveras RBI-single, a walk and a pair of two-RBI singles by Jackson Holliday (2 for 3, R, 3 RBI, SB) and Taylor Ward (1 for 5, R, 2 RBI, BB) resulted in 4 additional runs.
The Orioles tied the game in the eighth on a Mayo two-RBI triple.
Yennier Cano pitched a clean eighth inning and Tyler Wells held the Tigers scoreless in the ninth to move the game into extra innings.
Following a scoreless tenth by both teams, Yohel Pozo knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly and Holliday knocked in another with a RBI-single in the eleventh. Detroit’s Spencer Torkelson hit a two-run homerun on the very first pitch of the inning thrown by Rico Garcia to tie the game once again and move it to the twelfth inning.
Colton Cowser‘s (1 for 1) two out RBI-single to center allowed Taylor to score what would prove to be the game-winning run.
Grant Wolfram (4-2), who relieved Garcia with two outs in the eleventh, combined with Andrew Kittredge (0.1 IP) to close out the game and earn the win while Kittredge recorded his fourth save of the season.
Based on the way the game started, a win by the Orioles seemed out of reach; Detroit had a 99% win probability with two outs in the top of the seventh inning. Trevor Rogers gave the team a 6.0 inning start but he allowed 7 runs, 4 earned, on 8 hits while striking out 6. He retired the first six Tigers’ batters before allowing 2 runs at the start of the third inning on a single, a double and a two-RBI single. Rogers pitched with runners on base in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and threw a total of 94 pitches (69 K’s) in his start.
With the win, the Orioles are 10-17 in one run games this season.
