The Baltimore Orioles lost 4-3 to the Arizona Diamondbacks (10-8) on Tuesday night at Camden Yards. Fans in the ballpark and at home witnessed something that has not been seen in a while; Trevor Rogers (2-1) being relieved prior to the sixth inning.
Rogers was pulled after throwing 99 pitches (61 K’s) in 4.2 innings. He allowed 4 runs on 9 hits, including a fifth inning three-run homerun to Ildemaro Vargas, walked 1, struck out 6 and threw 2 wild pitches. Rogers allowed at least one hit in every inning he pitched and was tagged with the loss.
Once again, the Baltimore bullpen held an opponent scoreless. Arizona failed to get a hit off of the bullpen until James McCann singled off Nick Raquet in the ninth inning. Rico Garcia, Grant Wolfram and Yennier Cano combined to strike out 7 Diamondbacks hitters across 3.2 innings.
The Orioles opened the scoring with a lead-off homerun by Samuel Basallo in the second inning. He ended the night by going 2 for 3 with a run scored, 1 RBI and a walk.
Leody Taveras knocked in a run in the third on a bases loaded walk. He also hit a RBI single in the eighth that allowed Pete Alonso to score. Taveras finished with a line of 1 for 3 with 2 RBI and a walk.
Jeremiah Jackson continues to swing a hot bat, going 2 for 4 with a double and is currently slashing .333/ .340/ .563. He was picked off third base in the fourth inning by McCann.
The Orioles missed some opportunities by leaving the bases loaded in both the third and eighth innings and were 1 for 6 with runners in scoring position. The team simply needs to cash in these opportunities.
