The Baltimore Orioles lost 4-1 to the Tampa Bay Rays (32-15). The story of the loss was twofold, a lack of hits by the Orioles and an inability to record the third out of an inning by the pitchers.
Taylor Ward hit his second homerun of the season on the second pitch of the game, a 385 ft. shot to left field. Adley Rutschman followed that with a one-out single but was erased on a double play. A single by Colton Cowser in the third inning and one by Gunnar Henderson in the sixth was the totality of the offense save for a pair of walks. Baltimore’s bats were 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position with 3 runners left on base.
Three of Tampa Bay’s four runs came with two outs. A walk and a RBI-double with 2 outs in the first opened the Rays’ scoring. A hit batter, a RBI-double and a RBI-single plated a pair of runs in the eighth with two outs. Tampa Bays other run came in the sixth on a solo homerun by Yandy Diaz leading off the inning. In addition, the Rays placed runners on base with two outs in both the fifth and seventh innings.
Kyle Bradish (2-6) took the loss for his 5.1 inning effort that saw the Rays score 2 runs on 4 hits, including the Diaz homerun. Bradish walked 3 and struck out 6 on 102 pitches (60 K’s).
Anthony Nunez struck out 1 in finishing the sixth inning. Keegan Akin faced three batters in two-thirds of the seventh with Yennier Cano and Rico Garcia finishing out the game by allowing a run each.
The Orioles have now lost 13 of their last 19 games and sit in last place, 12.0 games behind the Rays in the AL East.
What is the confidence level that Baltimore can right the ship?
