Scoreless In Seattle

Thursday’s 3-0 shutout at the hands of the Seattle Mariners (39-37) was the first time that the Baltimore Orioles were held scoreless in a game this season.

Limited to three hits on the day, a double by Jackson Holliday (1 for 3) in the third inning, a Colton Cowser (1 for 2, BB) single in the fifth and a Leody Taveras (1 for 4) single in the eighth, the Orioles hitters were simply befuddled by Seattle pitching. Seattle starter Bryan Woo (6-5) struck out 9 of the 25 batters he faced over 7.0 innings, and it was a single and a walk that he allowed to open the eighth inning that marked the end of Woo’s afternoon.

Mariners relievers Eduard Bazardo and Andres Munoz each struck out one in 1.0 inning of work. Of the 11 strikeouts recorded by the Orioles, only Blaze Alexander and Holliday escaped striking out. The other seven players in the starting lineup were not as lucky.

To add some perspective to the game, while the Birds recorded three hits, the Mariners recorded three of their five hits in a three-run first inning. A single, a walk, a double and another single, all coming with two outs in the inning combined to result in the three runs.

All of those runs were scored on Baltimore starter Shane Baz (4-7). Baz then allowed back to back singles to open the Seattle second inning. That made for five hits surrendered to the first nine batters he faced. Baz did however, settle down after that by retiring 18 of the next 19 batters he faced including 13 in a row. Tagged with the loss, Baz produced a quality start by allowing 3 runs on 5 hits with 2 walks and 9 strikeouts over 7.0 innings of work.

Rico Garcia struck out 1 in the eighth and stranded the two runners he inherited from Baz.

Keep an eye on Adley Rutschman who left the game in the ninth after being hit in the head by a throw to first base.
