The Baltimore Orioles opened their homestand before the MLB Trade Deadline on Monday with a 6-4 win over the Philadelphia Phillies (57-53) in a game played aon Friday night. The question now is how does this win affect the Orioles’ strategy going into the MLB Trade Deadline? We did learn after the game that Dean Kremer was traded to the Minnesota Twins for MiLB player Jhomnardo Reyes.
Trailing 4-2 going into the home half of the seventh inning, the Orioles scored 4 runs to take the lead. Christian Encarnacion-Strand (1 for 1) hit a pinch-hit 2-RBI double and then scored along with Pete Alonso on a 2-RBI triple by Gunnar Henderson (1 for 4).
The Phillies score 2 runs in their half of the first inning and Alonso answered back with a 2-run homerun to right center field that allowed Dylan Beavers, who doubled to open the home half of the first, to score.
Philadelphia took the lead with homeruns by Trea Turner in the third inning and JT Realmuto in the sixth.
Both of those homeruns were hit off of starter Brandon Young, who allowed 4 runs on 5 hits with 2 walks and 5 strike outs over 5.2 innings of work.
Four Baltimore relievers closed out the game with Tyler Wells getting his 4th save of the season in relief of Anthony Nunez (3-2) who earned the win for his 1 walk, 1 strike out effort in 0.2 innings in the seventh inning.
Baltimore also got a 1 for 3, 1 run, 1 walk performnce from Jackson Holliday.
Currently 1.5 games out of the third Wild Card spot in the AL, the question becomes, how does this affect the Front Office’s plans for the deadline, if at all?
The next three days will certainly be filled with intrigue.
