The Baltimore Orioles waited out a 23-minute delay while the field was prepared foloowing thunderstorms earlier in the afternoon. Once the game was able to be played, the New York Yankees (72-55) completed a three-game sweep of the Orioles with a 6-1 win in front of a pinstripe leaning crowd at Camden Yards.
The loss was the fourth consecutive for the Orioles and the second in which they were limited to just one run. New York pitching allowed the Orioles four hits on Thursday, three of which were singles. The Orioles were once again unable to capitalize on what few opportunities they had by going 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position. Baltimore started the week two games below .500 and now find themselves six games below .500, illustrating how quickly fortunes can change, especially in the American League.
Dylan Beavers (1 for 3) produced the only run for the Orioles with his fifth inning homerun off of Yankees starter Gerrit Cole (7-6). It was the fifth homerun of the season for Beavers and was his second in as many games.
Pete Alonso went 2 for 4 and Gunnar Henderson went 1 for 3 with a walk to round out Thursday’s anemic offense.
Kyle Bradish (7-12) took the loss after giving the team a gutsy performance. He allowed 5 runs, 3 earned, on 8 hits with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts on 100 pitches (60 K’s). Bradish gave up a pair of homeruns to Luis Garcia Jr and Spencer Jones in the sixth inning.
The third inning was the Orioles’ undoing. Back to back singles by Jones and Austin Wells opened the inning. Jose Caballero hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Jones. The play could have resulted in a double play but recorded not one out because Henderson didn’t catch the throw from Jackson Holliday. After a double play, a single and a double resulted in a pair of unearned runs.
Albert Suarez gave up a RBI-triple to Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the eighth inning, which accounted for the Yankees’ final run, a run that moot at that point.
