Attempting to complete a series sweep on Thursday afternoon, the Baltimore Orioles lost the finale with the St. Louis Cardinals (67-68) by a score of 7-5. Trailing 5-0 after four innings, the Birds broke the ice in the top of the fifth only to see the Red Birds answer the Orioles run with one of their own. The Orioles drew within one to make it 6-5 in the top of the eighth. St. Louis added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth and despite allowing a two-out single in the ninth, shut the door on the Birds of Baltimore.
Trevor Rogers (9-9) made the start and allowed 6 runs on 7 hits over 5.0 innings. He walked 1 and struck out 7 on 86 pitches (60 K’s). Rogers fell victim to the homerun, allowing a Blaze Jordan three-run shot in the second inning and a two-run shot to his former Orioles teammate, Ramon Urias, in the fourth inning. The Cardinals scored their sixth run off Rogers in the fifth inning on an Alec Burleson groundout to first base with the bases loaded.
Cam Sanders held St. Louis in check, allowing a hit and a walk with four strike outs over 2.0 innings. Anthony Nunez gave up a two-out walk to Urias who stole second base and scored the insurance run on a Nathan Church RBI-single.
A sacrifice fly by Colton Cowser (1 for 3) allowed Christian Encarnacion-Strand (2 for 4, 2B, 2 R) to score Baltimore’s fifth inning run.
Coby Mayo (1 for 4) hit a three-run homerun, his 18th of the season, with one out in the seventh inning. The homerun travelled 446 ft. to center field at an exit velocity of 111.2 mph.
Jackson Holliday (2 for 4, 2B) singled and stole second base before scoring on Gunnar Henderson‘s (1 for 4) RBI-double in the eighth inning.
While Thursday’s game was not the offensive explosion of the previous two games, the Orioles still had a good series overall, outscoring the Cardinals 26-15 on 36 total hits.
