The Baltimore dropped a third game to the Oakland A’s on Thursday. For the record, the score was 6-4 but the real story was the ejection of Trey Mancini in the fourth inning.
With two outs in the fourth, Mancini (0 for 2) hit a ground ball to second, Oakland’s Nick Allen committed a throwing error, Mancini ran through the bag, stutter-stepped in returning to the base, was tagged by catcher Sean Murphy and called out by umpire Rob Drake. During the ensuing argument Manager Brandon Hyde was also ejected.
For the second day in a row an Oriole batter was hit by Oakland pitching (Robinson Chirinos was hit on Wednesday). This time it was Ryan Mountcastle (1 for 3, 2 Runs Scored) on the receiving end.
Austin Hays (2 for 4, 1 double, 2 RBI) had a big day in leading the Baltimore offense.
Cedric Mullins went 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored.
Tyler Wells (0-2) started and lasted just 2.1 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, including a Cristian Pache homerun in the 3rd inning, and striking out 1. He was tagged with the loss.
Joey Krehbiel has yet to allow an earned run in 2022 (7.1 IP). The right-hander struck out 2 batters in 1.2 innings of relief of Wells.
Keegan Akin allowed his first runs of the season when Murphy homered in the fifth inning. Akins finished with a line of 2.0 IP, 2 Runs Allowed and 2 strikeouts.
