The Orioles stopped the Toronto Blue Jays eight-game winning streak on Friday with a 6-3 win at Camden Yards. The Orioles used the power of the homerun to do so, hitting three to account for all of their runs in the game.
Cedric Mullins (1 for 4, 2 runs scored, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 2 SB) led off the game with his 28th homerun of the season. Can you say 30-30? Austin Hays (2 for 5, 1 run scored) followed that with a triple, extending his hitting streak to 16 games, and scored on Ryan McKenna’s (1 for 2, 1 run scored, 2 RBI) second homerun of the season.
That three-run first inning was equaled by the same in the 7th inning. Mullins started the inning by reaching base on a fielding error, advanced to second on a fielder’s choice and took third base on a wild pitch. Trey Mancini (1 for 3, 1 2B, 1 run scored, 1 BB, 1 HBP) then reached base on a walk to set the stage for Anthony Santander (1 for 3, 1 run scored, 3 RBI) to hit his 15th homerun of the season; Santander was pinch hitting for McKenna.
Starter Chris Ellis gave the O’s a solid effort, allowing 1 run on 5 hits with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts over 5.0 innings of work.
Fernando Abad was not so solid. The reliever gave up 2 runs, 1 earned, and 1 hit in one-third of an inning. He also decked Lourdes Gurriel, Jr while trying to back-up an errant throw when he stepped into Gurriel’s running lane towards home plate.
Conner Greene was the beneficiary of the seventh inning scoring as he was the pitcher of record. Greene tossed 1.2 innings, gave up 2 hits, allowed an inherited runner to score and struck out 3 to win the first game of his career.
Cole Sulser earned the save, his 7th, with a 2.0 inning, 2 hit, 1 walk, 1 strikeout effort.
It will be interesting to see if anything occurs over the next three games as a result of manager Brandon Hyde’s second inning heated exchange with Blue Jays starter Robbie Ray.
